PACIFIC COAST MUSIC

Think Colombia means think the relation, means the understanding of history, of memory, of many days, years, centuries of live, of experience, of love, of death, of music… dividing this wonderful part of the world in region is a difficult issue, not because the difference but the relation… it is impossible to dislocate the black slave historical occurrence, the Indian world even the conquistadors actions, because all along the continent and specifically Colombia all what we are is a unpredictable result of creolization, of colonization and resistance; the resoult is a huge constelation of dances, of voices, of people, of different music, of different traditions.

Now, If we think in the modern way of socialization, communication, culture, music we can find that many aspect of traditional society have found a new space of representation, a new space of encounter with the world, without being ruined. A perfect example of this kind of situations is the musical production of CHOQUIBTOWN, a group from the pacific coast of Colombia, that gather many modern rhythms like hip hop, electronic sounds, and diverse kind of conceptions of music like salsa and funk and, what is more important the profound influence of traditional pacific music. But let’s hear in their own words what this is about.

But this wonderful group not only think of musical relation, they have an intense sense of social responsibility assuming a strong position against social and ethnic discrimination, violence, corruption, and many social problems that affect in a very direct way the population of the pacific coast.

Here there are some of the videos that concern of social and regional issues, and cultural claim. Enjoy the music.

AMAZONIAN MUSIC

The music that you can find in this region is a music that speaks of times past, of times where the sole inhabitants of Colombia were the natives. In others words the musical patterns that govern the field of indigenous cultures are totally different to others culturesin the country.
In the colombian Amazon the folklore is closer to the folklore of neighboring Brazil and Peru. Our aboriginal music hasn't a esthetic significance, but functional: you can say it is an ingredient for needs in a magical and religious fields. It dominates the voices singing in groups of no tonal differentiation, the melody is in charge of horn instruments (flutes of Carris, diverse, fotutos, capadores, whistle, ocarinas, discos zumbadores, etc.), While the rhythmic elements are executed with membranófonos and idófonos. The melodies are repetitive and with a few notes in an escalístico field (trictónicos).
In the Amazonian departments of Caqueta and Putumayo, has been created the Merengue Andino. It is Andean because the rhythms was developed based on Andean peasants in the Putumayo Andean region , but is very popular in the Amazon region of those departments.

Andean Music

In the heights of the Andean Mountains, the sounds from the soul of the people that lives here take their place in the Colombian Folklore.

The Andean Music is known for their beautiful and melodious notes, from quenas, zampoñas, guitars, charango, bombos and rattles, that shake to the people.

In our country, The Andean music is a little different. The rhythms of guitar and tiple gives it a magic touch. We've heard something about the bambucos, torbellinos, san juanito etc. but many people, especially young people, don't know anything about this piece of their culture and folklore. The modern and popular rhythms maybe be the guilties. Today is a little strange that a teenager says "I like the colombian Music", Why?, maybe beacause that isn't "cool". However some people that feels pride for his regions and oral tradition try to gives a new meaning to the Andean Music, for example the members of the Andean Music-Rock band, Bambarabanda, natives of Pasto, with funny lyrics that contain Pastuso vocabulary.

Although Andean music not as popular as ever, still has its small space in the hearts of all those who want to give it a new meaning.

His Majesty: The Bambuco

All of we have heard something about the bambuco. but, what is this really?

The bambuco is the most reprensentative musical rhythm of our country. Some researchers argue that their origin may be african, spanish or chibcha. But its clearly that their true origin, and consolidation was in the Andean Region of Colombia. With happy dances and melodic tunes made mainly for stringed instruments like the guitar, the reponsable of the mainly "riff" and basses, the tiple which gives its melodic characteristics. Sometimes the bambuco is played with another instruments, like the flute and the requinto.

We can hear the bambuco in Antioquia, Boyacá, Huila, Nariño, Tolima, etc. This kind of music is to reprensentative to Colombia, that many years before its celebrated the Reinado Nacional e Internacional del Bambuco.
