Think Colombia means think the relation, means the understanding of history, of memory, of many days, years, centuries of live, of experience, of love, of death, of music… dividing this wonderful part of the world in region is a difficult issue, not because the difference but the relation… it is impossible to dislocate the black slave historical occurrence, the Indian world even the conquistadors actions, because all along the continent and specifically Colombia all what we are is a unpredictable result of creolization, of colonization and resistance; the resoult is a huge constelation of dances, of voices, of people, of different music, of different traditions.
Now, If we think in the modern way of socialization, communication, culture, music we can find that many aspect of traditional society have found a new space of representation, a new space of encounter with the world, without being ruined. A perfect example of this kind of situations is the musical production of CHOQUIBTOWN, a group from the pacific coast of Colombia, that gather many modern rhythms like hip hop, electronic sounds, and diverse kind of conceptions of music like salsa and funk and, what is more important the profound influence of traditional pacific music. But let’s hear in their own words what this is about.
But this wonderful group not only think of musical relation, they have an intense sense of social responsibility assuming a strong position against social and ethnic discrimination, violence, corruption, and many social problems that affect in a very direct way the population of the pacific coast.
Here there are some of the videos that concern of social and regional issues, and cultural claim. Enjoy the music.
